Virginia Released Illegal Immigrant With Long Criminal Record Days Before He Allegedly Sexually Assaulted DC Woman
Federal authorities placed a detainer on him a year ago, but Gov. Spanberger ended the state's cooperation with ICE.
A man from El Salvador is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a Northern Virginia parking garage — with federal authorities saying he should have been arrested and turned over to immigration officials a year ago.
And he would have been caught sooner, they say, if Virginia under Governor Abigail Spanberger did not refuse to work with federal immigration enforcement.
Arlington County Police Department’s Special Victims Unit this week arrested the suspect in the May 22 attack, 25-year-old Cristobal Vasquez-Sanchez. He “has prior charges for rape, sexual assault, property damage, drug possession, and larceny,” Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Lauren Bis told ABC 7 WJLA’s Nick Minock yesterday.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on Vasquez-Sanchez after he was charged for property damage April 22, 2025. But he was left free to continue committing crimes. “Sanctuary politicians released this criminal from jail back into Virginia communities. Vasquez-Sanchez then went on to rack up charges for rape and sexual assault,” Ms. Bis said.
