Trump Says Agreement Reached for Hamas’ ‘Complete Disarmament'
The president also said Gaza will get a new government.
President Trump said Thursday evening the Board of Peace overseeing negotiations in Gaza “reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups.”
The president made the announcement on Truth Social; the White House shared it on X.
“This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY,” Mr. Trump said, calling the deal “a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government that will work closely with the Board of Peace to help the Palestinian people.”
Implementation will take place “in carefully structured phases,” the president said, without specifying what those steps are or when they will take place.
Mr. Trump added, “As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors.”
He said the news represents “historic progress” in an area where a year ago there was a “violent raging war, humanitarian crisis and hostages kept in brutal captivity.”
The president thanked mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey as well as what he called “my outstanding team” for the tireless work that made the agreement possible.
“The threat that emerged from Gaza on October 7 will NOT be allowed to rebuild! Under this agreement, Gaza will finally be in the hands of a new Palestinian government that serves its PEOPLE,” he said.
The Israeli government expressed reservations about the proposal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the 15-point plan did not meet Israel’s demands for Hamas’ complete disarmament and Gaza’s full demilitarization, The Times of Israel reported.
The Jerusalem Post reported, however, that “senior White House Board of Peace officials” had worked with Israel “the whole time” on the pact. The newspaper quoted unnamed senior officials as saying Israel is “skeptical that Hamas will disarm, but not much they can do except see it happen, Israel signed, Hamas signed, there is a commitment here. This is a historic breakthrough.”
The unnamed officials said Hamas’ tunnel network would be destroyed, weapons would be collected, and housing would be constructed for Gaza residents. No timetable for implementation has been disclosed, the newspaper said.
