The frontrunner in Michigan’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, Jocelyn Benson, for years touted her ties to the Southern Poverty Law Center. But with the nonprofit facing federal indictment, accused of paying people to create the very hate and extremism it decries — and losing one court battle Monday — Ms. Benson is trying to minimize those connections.

A federal judge today rejected SPLC’s motion asking the US District Court for the Middle District of Alabama to order the Justice Department to retract a public statement on its fraud charges and “refrain from making any further false or misleading statements.” The organization had complained about Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s April 21 appearance on Fox News, the day the 11-count indictment dropped accusing it of channeling millions to supposed “field sources” through shell groups.
