Eligible Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Part D can get GLP‑1 weight-loss drugs for a $50 monthly copay starting July 1, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services chief Dr. Mehmet Oz announced Tuesday.

At a White House briefing, Dr. Oz noted the medications — “the weight-loss products that the president speaks of frequently,” as he said — typically carry list prices exceeding $1,000 per month.

Dr. Oz argued the drugs, also used to treat Type 2 diabetes, could reduce complications associated with obesity, including hypertension, kidney disease, heart disease, stroke, dementia, and some cancers.
