AOC Freezes Her Eggs for Presidential Shot
The 36-year-old Democrat may run in 2028.
For the sake of politics, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is putting off parenthood she announced Sunday.
Early in her days in office, in 2019, the Democrat said, “The world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.” That would mean civilization ceasing in 2031, just five years from now.
So it’s the end of the world as she knows it. And AOC feels fine.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to postpone parenthood is not to never have kids, for fear of climate change. She is freezing her eggs so she has the option to try at a later date.
The 36-year-old’s first shot at the presidency comes in 2028: She now meets the Constitution’s age-35 requirement to run for the nation’s highest office.
“This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said.
She’s sharing her egg-freezing journey via video. “Don’t be weird about this,” she says in one after jabbing herself in the belly with medication.
Michigan Democratic state Representative Laurie Pohutsky told the world last year she got her tubes tied, blaming the newly reelected President Trump and citing worries about “reproductive freedom.”
But Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2022 allowing for limitless abortion. The Supreme Court ruled that abortion is a state issue, not a U.S. constitutional issue. Mr. Trump had no actual impact on Ms. Pohutsky’s decision; she used him as a scapegoat.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is moving in the opposite direction, and in one action, freezing her eggs takes down two arguments.
The first is that the world is melting and will soon end due to climate change. Someone who believes that would not just change course years later, even and especially if they’re the mother of the Green New Deal. Freezing eggs, at great cost, is pointless if you believe 2031 will be the last year of human existence. The egg-freezing procedure Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has started costs upwards of $8,000.
The second is that women’s uteruses are not safe in a world where Mr. Trump is president. Ms. Pohutsky tried making this argument, but nobody bought it. Then she pivoted and spoke as if the tube-tying was a private matter.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez isn’t even bothering to make the Trump argument. For her, freezing eggs is not about Mr. Trump; it’s about preparing for perhaps her best chance to replace him in 2028.
The progressive firebrand found an unlikely supporter in Katie Miller, wife of top Trump confidant Stephen Miller.
“We have historically low birth rates worldwide. If one woman wants to preserve her right to have children, which means more than having none — we should celebrate that,” Mrs. Miller posted on X. “Everyone’s journey to motherhood is different, just as each of us mothers differently. I can’t wait to see how motherhood changes AOC.”
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has been engaged to web developer Riley Roberts for more than four years, though she quit wearing her engagement ring in November 2023.
The House Ethics Committee criticized her in its July 2025 report on the freebies she accepted to attend the 2021 Met Gala with Mr. Roberts: “The Committee further notes that at the same time Representative Ocasio-Cortez was seeking to take advantage of exceptions to the Gift Rule only applicable to spouses and/or certain relatives, she was not disclosing Mr. Roberts’s financial interests as is required of Members who are legally married.”
